The Smiley Building is the only building (and grounds) in Durango, Co that is truly “off the grid. ” In 1997, owners Lisa Bodwalk and Charles Shaw, and their then partner John Shaw turned the historic building into an eco-conscious space that is fully solar powered and energy efficient. The Smiley Building is complete with rooftop photovoltaic panels and other energy-conservation features including compact-fluorescent lighting, motion detectors, water-conservation technology, and high-efficiency wood and natural gas fired boilers.

Located right in Historic Downtown Durango, Co, The Smiley Building has become a unique fixture of the community.

From www.smileybuilding.com: Smiley’s goal is to create a space that people will love and gravitate to, a space that serves as a model for a new kind of world. “It sounds corny,” says building co-owner Lisa Bodwalk, “but it’s true: Smiley’s vision is about creating a new world, a new way to live. And it really is happening here. I see it every day in the halls of the building, people stopping to talk to one another, to share ideas and learn from one another. People with common and not-so-common interests just visiting and being together. That’s what Smiley makes possible.”

Gravity pulls people beyond the halls of the Smiley Building as well. Several community events and celebrations have taken place on the grounds At the Smiley. Outside, the open fields, the beautifully landscaped gardens, the patio, and a picturesque backdrop create a great venue for all kinds of events. From small intimate weddings to large corporate parties- the grounds at The Smiley Building can accommodate your needs.

For more information on renting the grounds, please contact Brenda Armstrong with Armstrong Professional Services 970-779-8556 or atthesmiley@gmail.com
